چکیده

Decoding the human brain state with BCI methods can be seen as a building block for humanmachine interaction, providing a noisy but objective, low-latency information channel including human reactions to the environment. Specifically in the context of autonomous driving, human judgement is relevant in high-level scene understanding. Despite advances in computer vision and scene understanding, it is still challenging to go from the detection of traffic events to the detection of hazards. We present a preliminary study on hazard perception, implemented in the context of natural driving videos. These have been augmented with artificial events to create potentially hazardous driving situations. We decode brain signals from electroencephalography (EEG) in order to classify single events into hazardous and nonhazardous ones. We find that event-related responses can be discriminated and the classification of events yields an AUC of 0.79. We see these results as a step towards incorporating EEG feedback into more complex, realworld tasks.

Driving Hazard Detection with a Bioptic Telescope

Driving by visually impaired people using bioptic telescopes is permitted in 43 states, yet their use remains controversial. One of the concerns is that the ring scotoma (blind area caused by the telescope magnification) may block the field-of-view, impacting detection of potential hazards when looking through the telescope. We evaluated the ability of the non-telescope eye to detect hazards in...

Personal driving diary: Automated recognition of driving events from first-person videos

In this paper, we introduce the concept of personal driving diary. A personal driving diary is a multimedia archive of a person’s daily driving experience, describing important driving events of the user with annotated videos. This paper presents an automated system that constructs such multimedia diary by analyzing videos obtained from a vehicle-mounted camera. The proposed system recognizes i...

Hazardous Traffic Event Detection Using Markov Blanket and Sequential Minimal Optimization (MB-SMO)

The ability to identify hazardous traffic events is already considered as one of the most effective solutions for reducing the occurrence of crashes. Only certain particular hazardous traffic events have been studied in previous studies, which were mainly based on dedicated video stream data and GPS data. The objective of this study is twofold: (1) the Markov blanket (MB) algorithm is employed ...

Age, skill, and hazard perception in driving.

This study examined the effects of age and driving experience on the ability to detect hazards while driving; namely, hazard perception. Studies have shown that young-inexperienced drivers are more likely than experienced drivers to suffer from hazard perception deficiencies. However, it remains to be determined if this skill deteriorates with advancing age. Twenty-one young-inexperienced, 19 e...

Classification of Eyetracking Signals with Vector-Based Neural Networks

The eye gaze point and the pupil size of five subjects were recorded during an overnight driving simulation task. By scoring the recorded videos clear microsleep events (MSE) and clear non-microsleep events were picked out and the measured signals in the preceding eight seconds were analyzed. The spectral power densities of these segments were classified using Learning Vector Quantization, Self...
